Media & Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue Foundation (MILID Foundation) has concluded plans to collaborate with the Nigerian Youth Parliament (NYP) to train Nigerian youths on the benefit of media and information literacy and artificial intelligence.

This was the outcome of discussions during a courtesy visit to MILID Foundation by the Nigerian Youth Parliament on May 7.

The NYP delegation led by its new speaker, Aliyu Zakari, included Bilal Lawal, Fatima Lamisula, Abbas Hussaini, Nelson Wilson, and Abdulmumin Aliyu.

Zakari noted that the visit was in line with the NYP’s “renewed commitment to youth empowerment, national cohesion, and inclusive development.”

He added that the Nigerian Youth Parliament under his leadership “is keen on strengthening partnerships with key stakeholders across government, civil society, and the private sector.”

The NYP speaker said he and his team were at MILID Foundation to introduce its vision and strategic agenda for the current legislative cycle, and explore areas of collaboration with MILID Foundation that align with the NYP’s goals of “building a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria driven by young leaders.”

In welcoming the delegation, Chiamaka Okafor, Executive Director, MILID Foundation, noted the importance of MIL for young people in the digital age, highlighting the need to address topical issues like critical thinking, misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, online radicalisation, and ethical us of artificial intelligence, among others. She said the Foundation was currently working with UNESCO Nigeria and in partnership with state ministries of information and education to conduct workshops for youth and youth-led organisation on how they can integrate MIL into their work.

The first workshop for the Northwest was held in Kano, Kano State, in October 2024, to coincide with the 2024 Global MIL Week. The second workshop for the Southeast took place in Awka, Anambra State, in April 2025, while the third workshop for the Southwest will hold Lagos in early July.

MILID Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation advancing media and information literacy for all through research, education, and participation. The Foundation’s work focuses on media and information literacy and its intersection with politics and democracy, environment, gender, sexual, and reproductive health, intercultural and interreligious dialogue as well as generative artificial intelligence.

The Nigerian Youth Parliament is a statutory youth body under the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, established to promote youth participation in governance and national development.

The partnership with NYP will include training on MIL for youth from across the country and participation in the MIL youth workshop for youth-led organisations n the Southwest.
